Libraries’ Littleton Seminar on Feb. 23

Drs. Kelly Hogan and Viji Sathy are the 2022 I.T. Littleton Seminar speakers

The NC State University Libraries is pleased to host Dr. Kelly Hogan and Dr. Viji Sathy, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill professors, as the 2022 I.T. Littleton Seminar speakers. They will deliver a virtual talk on inclusive teaching practices for libraries on Wednesday, Feb. 23 at 11:00 a.m. The seminar is free and open to the public; pre-registration is required.

Drs. Hogan and Sathy are both award-winning instructors with a combined 25+ years in the classroom at UNC-CH. Passionate about student success, and equity and inclusion in the classroom, their expertise covers inclusive techniques and active learning in all teaching situations, from online to face-to-face and from small-setting to hundreds of students.

At UNC-CH, they lead innovative classroom and diversity administrative initiatives that benefit all students, faculty, and staff. Both are leading their campus in curriculum reforms, bringing course-based undergraduate research experiences and makerspace courses to all disciplines. Both are featured experts in ACUE's Course on Teaching Effectiveness and have been active in the scholarship of teaching and learning in their respective disciplines of biology and statistics. Their work has been featured in national publications including The Chronicle of Higher Education and The New York Times. Hogan and Sathy are currently writing a book together.

In their talk, they will present a framework for inclusive teaching, drawing upon their own teaching experiences and educational research to model various strategies that can be readily implemented in one-off workshops and trainings that are typical in the work of libraries.

The I.T. Littleton Seminar is presented by the NC State University Librarians' Association. The annual event, funded by an endowment established in 1987 to explore key issues in the development of academic libraries and to honor former library director I.T. Littleton, is free and open to the public.

Littleton, who passed away in 2021, came to NC State in 1959 as Technical Services Librarian at the Hill Library. After a yearlong leave of absence to complete a Ph.D. in Library Science from the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, he returned to Raleigh as Director of Libraries in 1964. He served at NC State for 28 years until his retirement in 1987.
